Events By Design is a bespoke wedding Planning and Styling service based in West Sussex.
What is your style Sally - or can you adapt to all wedding requests?
I always like to refer to myself as a bit of a magpie – I like to try something new and love finding inspiration in different places. As a result, my style is ever-evolving, and I like that. It means that when couples come to me to design their day I can really ensure that a design reflects them personally. I love it when new trends appear, but it’s so important to use them as a springboard rather than follow then to the T. When couples look back at their photos it’s far better to see themselves reflected rather than what was trending in 2020! What I do know is that any style I work in must be contemporary and forward-thinking. Wedding design has come a long way and there are so many options for any couple. I encourage them to think outside the box and have a wedding which is original and creative.
What can you bring to the planning of a wedding?
Optimism, realism and a whole lotta laughs along the way. Planning a wedding does not have to be stressful or overwhelming. If a couple are finding that it is, then that’s the perfect time to bring in a planner, even if it is to take over the reins at the end of their journey. When I work with a couple my aim is to make sure they get to experience the excitement of finding their perfect band, their perfect street food, enjoy tasting the most amazing cake and enjoy the pampering they get when they have their make-up trial or their suit fitting. A good wedding planner will be able to make the boring or tense bits almost disappear!
What was the most romantic gesture you have seen and heard?
My own proposal. My husband had secretly invited all of our family to our home and involved all of our children from our previous relationships to hold up signs asking me to marry him. It was the perfect way to propose because all of the people I dearly love were able to be a part of it. Our children were a huge part of the wedding itself – the best men, bridesmaids, they did the readings and the best man’s speech. Family is a hugely important thing to us.
"Omg Sally thats amazing! Love that story its perfect, lucky you :)"
What would be the most important piece of advice you would give a couple?
In regard to their wedding, it would be to enjoy the journey; after they are married, to laugh with each other…lots.
Most popular requests/current trends for next year?
What is great it that I am seeing couples becoming more free-thinking - a bit outside the box. Couples nowadays have seen that they can have a wedding which is different to everyone else’s. They are not just looking on Pinterest and copying ideas but combining styles, colours and adding unique touches. I am personally loving the whole maximalism vibe which is currently trending, whether it be big blousy blooms, decadent accessories or a really unique statement table décor. I love its nod to different periods and its daring quality.
Do you have a favourite review?
I do. I love it because it epitomises everything that I try to achieve:
From start to finish, Sally was an absolute DREAM to work with. She stood by this sleep deprived mumma (who turned up to meetings with bags under my eyes and toothpaste down my jumper), listened to what we trying to achieve, and developed our ideas even further to create a truly unique and personal wedding day.
Balancing both my wishes (pretty things) and the groom’s (budget!) Sally was sensible and tactful when necessary but also an absolute HOOT, which was really appreciated and invaluable at times when wedding planning could otherwise be stressful. Frantically racking our brains to think of more parties we can plan together because we can’t deal with not having this lady in our life.
"Thats a wonderful review! I can see why it's your favourite one "
What do you love about the Wedding business?
I love that it is our job to help bring joy and happiness. I love making new friendships with my couples and I also love working with other like-minded suppliers. It’s not a bad job really!
What is your favourite personal touch you have seen at a wedding?
My favourite thing is always a signature cocktail served in Happy Hour. I love the element of personalisation which can be applied to it and a cocktail hour always goes down really well just before the dancing begins.
Memories of favourite wedding?
My favourite wedding happened last summer. It was a marquee wedding at the most beautiful venue, but not only that it had the best set of experiences: a soulful choir, a really cool brass band who processed guests through the forest, and the best disco where the guests themselves were the DJs.
